using a handful of production aliases, the spanish producer has been dishing out dark-tinted techno since the early 00s, often releasing on his own mental disorder imprint. his most prolific moniker is reeko, with which hes put out some three dozen records. his relatively more recent work as architectural, meanwhile, has been highlighted by a few appearances on semantica, including the 2012 solo release peacetime-a track from that one, looking ahead, earned a place in norman nodges berghain 06 mix for ostgut ton.

hot creations hit us with another monster of a release this time from tom dinsdale (ex-audio bullys) under his new project mineo. title track turn out the lights is an intoxicatingly deep groover with a dense low riding bassline, punchy warm chords and an infectious dark male vocal adding a real standout element for the dancefloor.

dark maneuvres is a track which lives up to its name, the original expressing pumping, dark and crunchy sounds interspersed with string arrangements and overdubs which move the track in various different directions. the 1996 original is a great example of some production techniques of the time and is of interest in identifying the direction of the techno sound in that era, as well as being eminently listenable. slam were very much involved in the progression of techno at the same time as envoy was creating tracks such as dark manoeuvres and as such they have a real handle on how things have evolved, enabling them to bring a classic release such as this bang up to date. the distinctive hook, attention-grabbing melody and strings which are distinctive elements of the original are all incorporated in a full and fresh dynamic which sees some of these elements regrouped in individual sections such as the strings or moulded with deeper, darker resonance into a new expression.

the alias of welsh-born, california-based brian williams, lustmord first emerged as an associate of spk in the early 80s, before embarking on a solo career that has yielded such classics as heresy (1990), the place where the black stars hang (1994) and (with robert rich) stalker (1995). lustmord has also contributed to numerous hollywood films as music and sound designer, and collaborated with the likes of clock dva, chris & cosey, geir jenssen, the melvins, tool, aaron turner, monte cazazza and coils jhon balance. often seen to epitomize dark ambient, it would be more accurate to say that his work simply goes deeper, further, than conventional ambient dares, or is able, to go. half a decade in the making, the word as power is his new studio album and an exploration of ritual music without dogma.

following on from the release of david ks well-received sneakers & playground ep, the unnerving pairing of nico & pherox (aka tim querengaesser) return with a record that is veiled by in a dark and mysterious shroud. nico (previously known as verena) is a young and fresh female artist, influenced from an early age by the classical work of her father (who worked as a music composer), whilst pherox is a more familiar presence in todays deep clubbing landscape, having released on mupa, catenaccio, dumb unit, stock5 and his very own label, slash. on this ep, the pair explore a broad palette of sounds, taking in italian horror film-esque chords, chopped and screwed vocal samples, rolling basslines, soothsaying vocals, drawn out fog horn stabs. this is deep music, flavoured by the nocturnal, tinted by the eighties, and ultimately full of originality.

twd or the wild division records a new techno label based from terrassa (bcn) founded trough the collaboration between spear, dustertraum and miki craven. the label aims to follow a dark moody side of techno music, with simple structures and analog sounds reminiscent the old mid 90s productions. this label is the result of the work of the last three years between this three artists. the label will count with more international artists who will take part with the label signing and remixing further references.

what did you do the year you turned 21? hip-hop prodigy fashawn earned a spot on the cover of xxl magazine, toured the world and built a rep as one of raps new rising stars. fashawns debut album, *boys meets world*, was heralded by critics and fans alike as one of the best albums of 2009 for its gritty, streetwise and intelligent rhymes. some even compared his introductory opus to nas brilliant *illmatic*. it was enough for xxl to name fashawn to its list of hip-hops best freshman.
fast forward to 2012 and over 200 shows and 2 mixtapes later fashawn is back in full effect with his latest release *champagne and styrofoamcups*. featuring taylor gangs wiz khalifa, mfn mr. exquire, kobe, k young, chevy woods and more champagne and styrofoam cups is considered a top release in 2012. working with boy meets world producer exile, fashawn also called upon hip hops next generation of producers in dj dahi (kendrick lamar, dom kennedy), rahki (eminem, 50 cent) and classic west coast producers jake one and hecktik.

the recordings for the wires cracked were completed in a frenzied two week period in october of 2012. i had mentioned in discussing a previous albums construction that i prefer to forget how i build any particular electro-acoustic amalgam. this is so that i dont get to precious with them, so that i could refine them further, so that the sounds themselves speak beyond their aggregate parts. with the album being relatively fresh in my mind, i can still recall various components to the wires cracked -- the desolate howl of a metal screen activated by a desert wind, the hissing air compression from the cooling apparatus for a laser at the slac national accelerator laboratory operated by stanford university, and the tremolo rhythms from a thin wire that still get me thinking fondly of günter schickert -- but much of the caustic drone, thrumming reverberation, and tactile grit thoroughly escapes me. that is probably for the best, since these various parts speak to an existential rupturing, the collapse of the self, the aftershocks of dark energy, and a belief in the hope for renewal. named in homage to the series of collectable football cards from the 1970s, the rothmans label follows the inaugural mario kempes release with another long-haired icon being given his dues in the form of the harald toni schumacher release, complete with another four tracks of chugging techno-disco. emotional responses timothy j fairplay kicks things off with *off the rails*, an expectedly dark and tense piece of carpenter-esque synth, while lwe writer per bojsen-moller delivers the atmospheric techno of *staying late*, whose rippling analogue bassline gives way to an unexpectedly funky breakdown. on the flip, steve cooks *noahs arp* takes things a balearic house direction with its thick, filtered analogue textures adding some psychedelic colour to its mid-tempo grooves, while emile strunzs *magnetic* adds some acid flavour to its low-swung, vocoder saturated italo swagger.

mannequin has the dual and parallel aim to unearth hidden or unpublished gems, running along a road that starts from the period of reference for this kind of music (late 70s mid 80s) and comes to nowdays, with a vision deeply influence by factory records / 4ad labels.
